Pollution cover extends to liabilities arising out of the escape or discharge, real or threatened, of any substance from the entered ship. Accordingly, it encompasses pollution from tankers or non-tankers involving cargo, bunkers and other products coming from the vessel (for instance, engine exhaust or paint spray). However, the majority of pollution incidents dealt with by the Club involve the spillage of oil cargo or bunkers.
Cover includes not only the cost of cleaning up any pollutant and steps taken to avoid or minimise the risk of pollution, but also liabilities resulting from either pollution, contamination or clean-up measures. Fines levied by any competent authority as a result of a spillage are also covered. Note that cover for pollution risks is limited to US$1,000,000,000 (one billion) any one incident or occurrence.
