Steamship Mutual appoints Quartermaine as Head of Underwriting

Press Release

London, 7 August 2008
Stephen Quartermaine

The Club has issued the following Press Release:

Steamship Mutual, the leading P&I Club, today announces that Stephen Quartermaine has been appointed Head of Underwriting. He takes over the role from Gary Rynsard, the Chief Operating Officer. Effective immediately, Mr. Quartermaine will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating Steamship Mutual’s global underwriting strategy.

The Club’s aim is to achieve continued growth in its membership without jeopardising its strong financial position. Earlier this year Steamship Mutual posted record results, announcing a 9% growth in its entered tonnage combined with an operating surplus of USD27.6 million and a 17.5% increase in free reserves. Mr Quartermaine’s appointment will ensure the continuation of this strategy of robust but disciplined underwriting.

James Stockdale, CEO, commented,

Stephen’s appointment is integral to the Club’s future financial success. The P&I market continues to experience record levels of large claims and, in such a challenging environment, we must pursue a strong policy of prudent risk and financial management combined with sound underwriting if Steamship Mutual is to flourish as a top tier Club.”
