Since 1 July 2002 the installation of asbestos containing materials (ACMs) on board ships has been prohibited except for very limited uses pursuant to the requirements of SOLAS regulation II -1/3 -5. As of 1 January 2011 the installation of ACMs on board is absolutely prohibited without exception.

At the 88th session of IMO's MSC in November/December 2010 two circulars relating to these requirements were approved: The first, 1374, serves as a reminder of the requirements of SOLAS regulation II -1/3-5 following findings of ACMs on board beyond the limited permitted uses. The second, 1379, addresses the question of what constitutes a new installation under the regulation.

Both circulars are available to vew and download below with kind permission of IMO.
