Collision avoidance DVD released by Steamship Mutual

Press Release

London, 2 February 2009
Chris Adams

Steamship Mutual, a leading International Group P&I Club providing marine liability insurance worldwide, today releases its latest loss prevention DVD called “COLLISION COURSE”, an informative film about avoiding collisions at sea.

Presented by Edward Stourton, the 40 minute film explores the main reasons why collisions at sea occur and focuses upon four key provisions of The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea – look-out, safe speed, risk of collision, and action to avoid collision. The film also examines the conduct of vessels in restricted visibility.

From the results of collision investigations undertaken by the Club, it is frequently apparent that inadequate attention to the above issues contributes significantly to the cause and severity of collision incidents. The new DVD aims to raise awareness of these issues amongst watch-keeping officers, and thereby hopefully reduce collision risk. The DVD also contains graphical re-constructions of case-studies, and numerous reference documents.

Chris Adams, Steamship Mutual’s Head of Loss Prevention, said,

The risk of collision is one that affects all shipowners, regardless of vessel type or trade. Despite the dangers of collisions at sea and training in the correct application of the collision regulations, casualties still occur, sometimes with devastating consequences. Most incidents can be attributed to human error, and complacency on the part of watch-keeping officers is often evident. The new film highlights key provisions of the collision regulations where it is hoped that more focused attention will serve to reduce the risk of casualties of this nature occurring in the future.”

This latest DVD from Steamship Mutual "COLLISION COURSE” is available to Members free of charge and has been produced with the financial support of The Ship Safety Trust, which was established over 16 years ago to support shipboard safety and other loss prevention initiatives. Collision avoidance forms part of many important loss prevention initiatives endorsed by Steamship Mutual.
