Other Services

It is common for third party claimants to arrest a vessel against which they have a claim in order to obtain security. If the claim concerns a liability which falls within the Member's P&I cover the Club may be prepared to put up the security to obtain the release of the ship, subject to certain conditions. Guarantees given by P&I Clubs in the International Group are almost universally accepted as security, and this service is therefore extremely useful to the Members in avoiding costly delays to their vessels.

The provision of security by the Club is purely discretionary, and no Member has the right to demand that the Club provides a guarantee for any particular claim. However, if the claim is covered, the Club will normally be prepared to provide security, providing the Member is up to date with his premium and provides the Club with a counter security in respect of any part of the claim which is not covered, such as the deductible. Where only part of a claim for which security is demanded is covered (for example collision cases or claims subject to very high deductibles), the Club may still be prepared to provide security, subject to the Member providing a bank counter security in respect of the non-covered items.

Loss Prevention is an important area where the Club provides assistance to Members in the form of videos, seminars and publications.

NOTE: Further information with regard to Loss Prevention can be found in the Loss Prevention area of this Site.

The Club assists Members as and when required in drafting contracts, and giving general legal advice on matters connected with the operation of their vessels. It also provides an information service to the Members, keeping them up to date on legal developments and other areas of interest by means of regular publications and circulars.

The Club may also at times assist Members in arranging other insurance coverage not directly connected with P&I and even provide claims services for matters not falling within their Club cover.
